Just as in the past, flooding in Berwind is still a fact of life.......e-mail to Shirl (Joy) Turpin July 9, 2001 Just thought I would let you know that we had a lot of high water in McDowell County yesterday (July 8, 2001). Many of our people may be interested to know Berwind, Canebrake, Squire, and Bishop were hard hit with a flash flood, and many homes were damaged. War got off a little better, but we still had a flash flood in the Johns Branch section of war, several houses damaged, and the store that Connie and I own, War True Value Hardware, which is the old Bailey Lumber building, had a lot of damage to the lot and the supplies we keep outside. We spent all day washing out mud, and digging out. Other places in War had damage also. The rest of McDowell County had it worse. Rt. 52 to Bluefield was still closed today, and Welch had major damage, along with all areas toward Bluefield from Welch, including Gary and Anawalt. The National Guard was called in Sunday to help people get to safety from Welch up to Bluefield. I guess War and this area got off lucky. Jim and Connie Jones
