THE CALL OF THE MOUNTAINS
By Effie Ray

Softly the mountains are calling to me
Back to my homeland where I can be free,
Free from the rat race and bright city lights,
Free from the strangers and smog in the nights.

The place of my childhood I hold very dear
Memories of loved ones still linger near,
The fears of my childhood seem so far away
Compared to the problems I'm facing today.

I left my good home seekin' fortune and fame
But my nearest neighbor knows not my name,
I've saved a few dollars, I honestly earned
This lesson at home, I'm so glad I learned.

Fame and fortune escaped me as my parents had said
So back to the mountains today I feel led,
Folks raised in the city don't know what it means
The peace of the mountains, even in dreams
.
